British Transport Police cycle marking schemes at Surbiton and Staines stations

British Transport Police crime reduction officers are coming to Surrey this week to giveaway free tagging devices to owners of pedal cycles to ensure their property is more secure.

BTP officers are conducting crime reduction surgeries at Surbiton station from 4pm to 7pm on Tuesday, 19 August and at Staines from 4pm to 7pm on Thursday 21 August.

Last month officers tackled stations in Sussex to try and ensure as many commuters as possible have their bikes securely marked.

Officers are also giving cycle owners advice on how to reduce the chances of falling victim to bike theft.

BTP and Evans Cycles have teamed up offering the free electronic tagging device, Immobitag, to be fitted on to bikes meaning that stolen bikes are easier to identify and give back to their original owners if recovered.

BTP PC Jerry Isterling said theft of cycles was an ongoing problem on the railway network and has been compounded because many bike owners are not following simple measures to ensure they don’t fall victim to thieves.
